"Adopt a vacant house" to promote safer neighborhoods
Feb. 22, 2008 (MINNEAPOLIS) Vacant properties can pose safety challenges for everyone from neighbors, to property owners, to police officers and firefighters. The City of Minneapolis is taking comprehensive measures to make all our neighborhoods safer, including those affected by foreclosed or vacant properties. And there are lots of things that everyone can do to make neighborhoods with vacant properties the safest they can be. City leaders are encouraging neighbors and block clubs to work together by “adopting” a vacant property on the block. It’s important for neighbors to report any suspicious or illegal activity by calling 911.
- If you see someone inside or around a vacant property, call 911. Take care not to confront someone who is trespassing or living temporarily in a vacant property.
- Report a property that is open to trespass or if you observe anything on the property that could be a health or safety issue by calling 311.
- To report a building that is open to trespass, but has not yet been boarded, call the Housing Inspections Boarded Building Unit (612) 673-5828. They can check on the status of a building or start the process to board a property.
- Check on a vacant property occasionally to ensure doors and windows are closed and that the building is not open to trespass.
- You may maintain the public space—sidewalks and alleys—around vacant properties. It’s all right to shovel snow, rake leaves, and pick up or remove flyers and litter without notifying the property’s owner.
- Remember if you do maintain a property, it’s not OK to dig, climb on a building, enter a building or make improvements to vacant property before you have written consent from the property owner.
- If your block has a property with an ongoing problem, call your Crime Prevention Specialist at your police precinct. They can work with you to resolve a variety of “problem property” issues.

Northside Mentoring Opportunity
TRANSITION MENTORING
The Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches, Minneapolis Police Department and Hennepin County Adult Correction Facility invite you to join them in Transition Mentoring for ex-offenders who live on the Northside as they rebuild their life after leaving prison.
NEXT TRAINING:
Saturday, March 8, 2008
8:45 a.m. –2:00p.m.
Hennepin Co. Adult Corrections Facility
Men’s Building
1145 Shenandoah Lane, Plymouth
Directions: 494 north to Co. Rd. 6 – turn left on Co. Rd. 6 to Shenandoah Lane (west side of Parker's Lake)
Snacks/Lunch will be served
Please register for this free training by March 4, 2008 by emailing michelle@citypeace.org.
If you have questions about the mentoring experience, we can get you in touch with other PEACE Foundation members who are currently mentoring through this program.
WHY MENTOR?
In a recent study of ex-offenders involved with this program, there was a comparison between those who STAYED connected with their mentor after release from incarceration with those who DID NOT. The results are revealing. As a group, those who stayed connected with their mentors only had 6 arrests during the first year after release (compared to a total of 223 arrests for the two years prior to their arrests). Those who did not stay connected with their mentors had a total of 90 arrests in their first year after incarceration (compared to a toal of 282 arrests for the two years prior to their arrests).
While both groups - those who stayed connected and those who did not - had similar rates of arrest before incarceration, the rate of recidivism after incarceration was more than TEN TIMES HIGHER for those who did not stay connected to their mentors compared with those who did. What this tells us is that MENTORING WORKS!
