Foreclosure information workshops scheduled at Hennepin County libraries
April 28, 2008 -- Hennepin County has scheduled a series of public foreclosure information workshops at several local libraries to help residents – particularly homeowners currently facing foreclosure – understand the mortgage foreclosure crisis and how they can find assistance.
Last fall the board established a task force to study the foreclosure issue. Hennepin is one of the few counties in the nation conducting such a study. As a result of task force findings, the board recently approved several measures, including developing a Foreclosure Prevention and Response Program, funding nonprofits that provide counseling for homeowners and renters (many of whom are losing their housing when owners default), setting up a centralized foreclosure data repository, and providing funding for an additional county attorney position to address the dramatic increase in foreclosure-related cases.
As part of the response to the issue, Hennepin County Taxpayers Services is partnering with the Hennepin County Library and the Home Ownership Center – a counseling agency that provides foreclosure prevention education and outreach, as well as pre-purchase information for homeowners – to provide informational sessions on mortgage foreclosure for county residents.
The free workshops are aimed at homeowners who are worried about making upcoming mortgage payments or are already behind on their payments, or for anyone interested in learning more about foreclosure. The workshop will provide information on what happens during foreclosure, homeowners' rights, and what homeowners need to know when facing foreclosure. Participants will be able to ask questions and get free advice from local nonprofit foreclosure counselors.
Locations for the workshops, at four suburban and two Minneapolis libraries, were chosen based on the high number of foreclosures in the surrounding neighborhood and strong need of residents for more information. Additional meetings may be scheduled at other libraries later this summer.
The foreclosure information workshops are scheduled at the following libraries:
- Augsburg Park Library, 7100 Nicollet Ave., Richfield: Wednesday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m.
- Brooklyn Park Library, 8600 Zane Ave. N., Brooklyn Park: Monday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m.
- North Regional Library, 1315 Lowry Ave. N., Minneapolis: Tuesday, July 29, at 6:30 p.m.

National Night Out Planning Week: June 16-22
Building Community for 25 Years – Join the Celebration
This year, on August 5, more than 60,000 Minneapolis neighbors will gather for the 25th Annual National Night Out, celebrating and building community across the city. Advance planning makes it easier for everyone to have a good time, share the work and make things go smoothly on NNO. Last year, over 900 groups planned their parties in advance. Some events will be as simple as neighbors sharing food and conversation on a front porch; others will close off streets and provide music, face painting, chalk art, potlucks, dancing, games, and piñatas. So start your planning early and join the celebration.
Planning Week
Avoid the last-minute rush, start your NNO planning early during Planning Week, June 16-22. Meeting during Planning Week helps you organize your party, gives your group time to work out the details and gets more people involved. If the official Planning Week dates don’t work for your group, choose dates that do. CCP/SAFE, a unit of the Minneapolis Police Department, coordinates the City’s NNO each year and is promoting this 8th Annual NNO Planning Week.
Some things to discuss at planning meetings:
- How many people should we plan for? Who will get food, drinks, utensils, etc.?
- What kinds of activities will encourage conversation and people getting to know one another?
- What should we do for kids? Games, face painting, piñata, recognition awards for good things they’ve done, etc?
- Should we have music? What kind and who will arrange for it?
- Do we want to close the street? If so, who will apply (by the July 22 deadline)?
- Should we make an invitation flyer? Who will do it? Who will get the flyers to the neighbors?
- Do we need the flyer in more than one language? Which language(s) and who will do that?
- What will we do if it rains?
- It’s Free and It’s Easy to Register Your NNO Party and to Close Your Street for NNO
Tenants in Foreclosure Project at Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis
Hello NRP Staff,
My name is Sarah Dunne, and I am working on the Tenants in Foreclosure Project at the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis.
Recognizing the current need for legal assistance and advice to renters that are living in a building that is going through the foreclosure process, Legal Aid along with SMRLS (in St. Paul) and HomeLine (outside the metro) are all legal organizations working on projects to provide information and assistance to renters who are affected by the foreclosure crisis.
We want to get the word out to the various NRP organizations in Minneapolis that Legal Aid is available as a resource for tenants who have concerns about their landlords who are going through a foreclosure, and questions about what their rights are throughout the process. In addition, if any of the neighborhood organizations wanted a Legal Aid attorney to do a short presentation on tenants' rights or provide printed material for a board meeting or other event, we would be happy to try to schedule a time. Or if any of the neighborhood organizations are planning a foreclosure prevention or awareness workshop over the next several months, Legal Aid would be willing to participate if possible or provide materials for these events.
Please forward this email and/or contact information to your various NRP organizations' staff and board members, if you think that they might be interested.
Legal Aid intake line: 612.334.5970 (for tenants & new clients)
I can also be contacted directly to schedule presentations or info sessions, or to request printed materials: 612.746.3610 or sdunne@midmnlegal.org
Thank you and take care,
Sarah Dunne
